Medicare
Medicare options, without the confusion
Parts A, B, C and D, Medigap and enrollment windows, explained in plain English for you or someone you help.
What it covers
The parts of a policy, in plain English
Part A
Hospital insurance: inpatient stays, skilled nursing and hospice care.
Part B
Medical insurance: doctor visits, outpatient care and preventive services.
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Private plans that combine A and B, and often D, sometimes with extra benefits.
Part D and Medigap
Part D covers prescriptions. Medigap helps pay costs that Original Medicare leaves behind.
What affects your price
Why two quotes can look so different
Every insurance company weighs things a little differently, which is why comparing matters. These are the factors that usually move the price most.
- Whether you choose Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage
- The plans available in your ZIP code
- Your prescriptions and preferred doctors
- When you enroll, since late enrollment can bring penalties

Questions
Common medicare questions
When can I enroll in Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period is the seven months around your 65th birthday. There is also an Annual Enrollment Period each fall, from October 15 to December 7, for changing plans.
What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help pay deductibles and coinsurance. You cannot use both at the same time.
Where can I see every option?
Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048) and your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can show you all available plans.
