Home insurance
Protect the place you call home
Learn what a homeowners policy covers, how much dwelling coverage you need, and where the common gaps are, before you compare prices.
What it covers
The parts of a policy, in plain English
Dwelling
Rebuilds or repairs the structure of your home after a covered loss.
Personal property
Replaces your belongings, from furniture to electronics, up to your limit.
Liability
Covers you if someone is hurt on your property or you damage someone else’s.
Loss of use
Helps pay for temporary housing if a covered loss makes your home unlivable.
What affects your price
Why two quotes can look so different
Every insurance company weighs things a little differently, which is why comparing matters. These are the factors that usually move the price most.
- The cost to rebuild your home, not its market value
- Roof age, construction type and local weather risk
- Your deductible and any claims history
- Discounts for alarms, upgrades or bundling with auto

Questions
Common home insurance questions
Does home insurance cover floods?
Standard homeowners policies usually exclude flood and earthquake. Those need separate coverage, which is worth checking even outside high-risk zones.
How much dwelling coverage do I need?
Enough to rebuild your home at today’s labour and material costs. That is often different from what you paid or what the house would sell for.
What is the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value?
Replacement cost pays to replace items new. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation, so payouts are lower. Replacement cost usually costs a little more.
